The Space Center Intermediate school orchestra is one of the largest
public school orchestra programs in the state of Texas and includes
approximately 200 string players. Many social events are planned as
well as concerts and competitions in order to help the students make
lasting friendships and have fun as they develop a life-long
appreciation for music.
SCIS beginners start in the 6th grade with either violin, viola, cello,
bass or harp. Some students may begin lessons in a private studio
during elementary school but the majority of SCIS strings begin as 6th
graders.
SCIS orchestras have won numerous accolades and have performed
throughout the state. They have been ranked in the top 7 orchestras in
the state of Texas for the past 3 years. In 2006, they were named
runner up in the Texas State Honor Orchestra Competition. They have
received consecutive sweepstakes in the Texas state UIL competition
since it was opened.
The SCIS Chamber orchestra has also been honored to receive invitations
to perform at the Texas State Capital in Austin for the “Go Arts Day” in
2005
and 2008.
In the same year, Chamber was also invited to perform at the Wortham
Theater before the internationally renown Ahn Trio. Select students
from SCIS orchestras have even provided the music for several weddings,
the Lunar Rendezvous and the Bay Area Symphony League Fundraiser.
Our beginning orchestras are divided by instrument groupings. This
enables our beginners to get the full benefit of every minute of class
without waiting for explanations to another instrument group.
There are three advanced orchestras. Students begin the audition
process in April and continue throughout May to complete the audition
requirements. The three orchestras are:
-
Philharmonic
- 7th grade orchestra with low pressure.
-
Symphony
- advanced 7th graders and 8th graders, students who are motivated
to play!
-
Chamber
- similar to high school orchestra, they play in many competitions
and represent SCIS in different events around the area.
The SCIS orchestra classes are designed in such a way as to build on the
student’s self confidence as they are place in classes that suit their
needs. There are many social opportunities throughout the year to help
the students maintain friendships and have fun as they prepare difficult
music.
